History of the Event
The Colombo Classic is the tournament that unofficially kicks off the season at Seaforth Golf Course. Traditionally held on the first Saturday in May annually this event isn’t your traditional charity scramble.
The Colombo Classic originated over three decades ago as our Member/Guest tournament also known as the Spring Scramble. In the early 2000’s the tournament was renamed the Colombo Classic in honour of Gerard Meidinger. Gerard “Colombo” Meidinger was a Member, local business owner and a long time supporter of the event.
Although today the event is open to anyone and is primarily intended to raise funds for the Seaforth & Area Food Bank, a lot of the same people & even teams that participated in the tournament decades ago still tee-it-up today. This continued support from traditional participants means that although a charity event the tournament still maintains its aura of competition with many players wanting to give it their all on the course for both bragging rights and the hopes of adding their names to the Trophy.
Since its inception the Colombo Classic Spring scramble has raised thousands of dollars for various charities including the Seaforth & Are Food Bank, Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation & the Canadian Cancer Society. Over 10,000 dollars was raised in the last 3 seasons alone.
With many people feeling the impact of recent inflation and the economic recession this years event is focusing all of its efforts on the Seaforth & Area Food Bank.
